At Handel’s, we believe that strong franchise partners are the heart of our success. As we reflect on Black History Month, we’re proud to spotlight two inspiring entrepreneurs who embody the spirit of resilience, community and business excellence.
Alberta Berhannan and Michelle Evans, hailing from Youngstown, Ohio — the birthplace of Handel’s Ice Cream — were inspired by the brand’s reputation, commitment to quality and endless flavor offerings. They opened their first Handel’s parlor in Cumming, Georgia, this past November, with a vision to blend their business expertise and love for their community. Together, they embarked on this journey to deliver not just world-class ice cream, but to provide a best-in-class experience that reflects their dedication.
“We grew up on this local hometown favorite and have experienced Handel’s goodness firsthand,” said Berhannan. “Most importantly, we wholeheartedly believe in this brand.”
Handel’s embodies an inclusive culture that mirrors the vibrancy of our communities. More than just crafting exceptional ice cream, we are committed to championing a workplace where everyone feels valued, connected to our mission, and empowered to contribute their unique perspective is critical to our success.
“Alberta and I are extremely proud to be a Black female-owned business and to be part of a brand with such a unique offering and community-centric values that align with ours,” said Evans. “Oftentimes, we don’t see our reflection within the communities we serve, both from an ownership perspective and beyond. It’s an honor to have this level of ownership in one of our favorite homegrown brands — one that’s tried and true — and to bring its quality to our new home.” One of their goals is to inspire others with similar aspirations of becoming business owners, proving that with hard work, tenacity and belief in yourself, anything is possible.

Berhannan and Evans emphasize to other black business owners that franchising requires a leap of faith.
“There may be several ‘no’s’ along the way, but don’t allow that to veer you off course from your goal of business ownership,” said Berhannan. “Do your research and explore franchise opportunities committed to entering new markets and fostering a culture that empowers people from all walks of life. From our experience, Handel’s has been very welcoming and supportive of us at every step of this franchisee journey. They believe in us just as much as we believe in this brand and opportunity.”
The duo believes that fostering true diversity takes action. Too often, businesses claim to value inclusion, but what is reflected in frontline staff and management tells a different story.
“Diversity comes in all colors, shapes and sizes, and we’re committed to making a difference in the communities we serve,” said Evans.
Behannan and Evans recommend that franchisors looking to attract more diverse partners offer individuals with an entrepreneurial vision the opportunity for business ownership. Publicize that opportunities exist for those genuinely committed to building an ownership stake. Promote growth and highlight the franchisor’s commitment to expanding into new communities across the nation, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity.
“By embracing diversity in the franchisee base, franchisors send a clear message of cultural expansion. People will see that the dream of business ownership is achievable,” said Berhannan. “That commitment is exactly why we’re so proud to be part of the Handel’s family.”
At Handel’s, we’re proud to have franchisees like Alberta and Michelle, who are committed to delivering an incredible customer experience and passionate about inspiring the next generation of business owners.
Being a woman in this franchise has been a perfect fit—it’s about creating a family atmosphere where everyone feels valued, supported, and part of something bigger. And in that sense, it’s just the perfect place for women to thrive.
